COMPANY PROFILE
Pro Performance is a sports science consultancy that was started in 2002 by graduates Martin Poole and Dan Williams. The primary aim of the company was to deliver a high standard of support services to elite athletes to improve their training and competition performance.
“A big driving factor when we started Pro Performance was that we knew a lot of athletes were already receiving sports science support, but all too often assessment results were not explained to the athlete in enough detail and intervention strategies were not being implemented correctly. We set out to change this,” comments Poole.
Since its beginnings, Pro Performance have worked with athletes in a wide-range of top level sports including Premiership football clubs, dancers from the Royal Ballet School, Great Britain team rowers, World Champion snooker players, British and World Superbike riders, and of course racing drivers from karting level up to Formula 1.
“We started working with karting and car drivers from day-one. It struck us straight away that here was a sport where time, effort and money was being given to improving the performance of the car, but not enough attention was being given to the driver! We got straight to work changing people’s attitudes,” adds Poole.
Pro Performance now completely specialise in helping racing drivers prepare for competition. A comprehensive range of specific services have been developed including heat and altitude training, reaction training, mental skills coaching and competition support:
“Our role at a race or test is to ensure the driver is 100% ready every time they put their helmet on. Through a combination of physical preparations, finely balanced nutrition and unique focusing techniques we can really make a difference to their performance. This is the perfect complement to all the work we do with the driver in the lab and the gym throughout the year,” comments Williams.
Now benefiting from full medical support with partner company Motor Racing Medics (an MSA affiliated medical outfit), and operating from a new state-of-the-art performance facility in easy reach of Gatwick airport, Pro Performance now have new aims in their sights:
“Our first goal for the future is to develop long-term working relationships with dedicated, hard-working drivers who want to achieve their very best. Secondly, through our ongoing sports science research and involvement in motorsport we are aiming to make Pro Performance the gold standard human performance company in motorsport… bar none,” concludes Williams.
Finally, Pro Performance is serious about driver development and achieving excellence in sport. If this philosophy fits in with what you might be trying to achieve, then Martin and Dan look forward to working with you.
